Spotify, the popular music streaming tech giant, is today (1 April 2025) launching a new Doric service, playfully called Plookify, especially for users in North East Scotland.
Big brands are adept at harnessing the power of data-driven analytics to power customer insights and implement strategies to personalise their users’ experiences.
Spotify has embraced these insights and decided to create a sub-brand of its successful music platform in Doric called Plookify.
Around 100,000 new tracks are uploaded to Spotify every day, and they're sorted into one of more than 6,000 genre classifications. In 2023, Spotify's top twenty musical genres featured obscure ones like Filmi, Urbano Latino and K-pop, influenced by its Hindi, Spanish and Korean speakers.
Non-English genres have risen in popularity since 2017, and audiences are becoming more receptive to listening to, experiencing, and enjoying different genres and types of music. The increasingly diverse musical landscape is a growing trend.
Reflecting the rise of non-English genres, the diversification of musical genres and the demand for hyper-personalisation, Plookify has been developed in response to the demand from people in the North East of Scotland and Doric speakers who want to listen to localised tunes from their corner of the world.
Chief Developer of Plookify, N. E. Gowks, said, "We examined data from users in the North East of Scotland and discovered a high percentage were engaging with artists who sang in their local dialect, Doric. We want our users to have authentic brand experiences, so we decided to develop and roll out Plookify. We landed on the name Plookify as the Doric word for spot translates as 'plook', and we wanted the name to be both playful and memorable."
Bramble Graphics was privileged to receive a sneak peek of Plookify, the music streaming service for users in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and Angus. We were delighted to discover local talented artists and bands available to listen to on the platform.
We recommend you check out Guy Roch MC, Bundy, and Iona Fyfe. We can only hope the duo AyeTunes, who are on TikTok, uploads their brilliant Doric covers to Plookify soon so we can add them to our Doric tunes playlist, too!
Bramble Graphics received a sneak preview of the Plookify service and discovered local talent.
