Aberdeen residents have woken up in surprise to find a Doric Banksy graffiti artist called ‘Pranksy’ has struck their local neighbourhoods. The artworks suddenly appeared overnight with Doric parodies of famous Banksy graffiti.
There has been lot of speculation from Aberdonians as to the motives behind the new artwork and questions about the identity of Pranksy.
The real Banksy is a Bristol artist famous for his satirical and subversive street art which uses dark humour and graffiti stencils. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. His identity is currently unknown.
People are wondering who is Pranksy, and what is his reason for doing these urban messages.
‘I was passing by and I spotted this rat with the heart, sprayed on the library wall with the words ‘Haste ye back Cornhill’. I sent a photo to my friend. I was so excited because I thought Banksy had been here and had tagged the library in protest of them closing down.'
(Anne, Nurse, Cornhill)
'When I spotted this, I did wonder if the elusive Banksy had struck Ferryhill. The message made me laugh. I had no idea that Ferryhill was a Carnegie library. But unless Banksy has suddenly developed an understanding of Doric, I think it's a copy-cat Banksy.'
(Student, Ferryhill)
'Oh ma heid! Banksy’s been at the Woodside library overnight. He kens Doric! You hiv to check this oot!! John Anderson would be spinnin' in his grave aboot the cooncil shuttin the library, an taakin sides wi Banksy!'
(Dave, Mechanic, Woodside)
'Am thinkin the sign is aboot that cooncillor who said people can still access books using an ipad. Fit a neep! He's nae a scooby-doo aboot the fact that some folk roon here jist canna afford to buy funcy new ipads. Printed books are better for bairns onywye.'
(Sheena, pensioner in Northfield)
'Oh wow! This is so cool! NuArt has come to Cults. #Love #Grafitti #BanksyAberdeen #Mural.'
(Sophie, school pupil at Cults Academy)
'Pranksy is probably frustrated the council didn't listen to 6,000 people who signed the library petitions and have now closed a third of libraries in Aberdeen. I think it is disgraceful too. So I endorse Pranksy for his city-wide displays of fury. I reallydo hope they reopen these libraries soon.'
(Freddy in Garthdee)
'If they are real Banksys they would be worth millions. The council would be rolling in it. Then they could open more libraries! Apparently, there are loads of other ones that have popped up across the city, so maybe there are more to be discovered!' (Lee on Facebook)
'I do that know Banksy has been recently active in the UK, in coastal towns on his Great British ’Spraycation’ where he has been spotted in a beige camper van. Maybe he has come to The Granite City to help all those library and pool protesters! Having Banksy in Aberdeen is a good thing' (Ross via email)
'Woodside library was gifted to the community by John Anderson and there has been a lot of anger about the fact that Aberdeen City Council have closed the library due to a lack of funding. It's been shut for just one day and it has been already targeted by vandals' (Jim on Facebook)
'This is all about the libraries and pools being closed in Aberdeen due a local government cuts. We are all feeling the pinch and this is part of their protest to the Council.' (Robin on Instagram)
'These look like Banksy but they are all in Doric. So Is it actually the real Bansky who is supporting these campaigners, or is it a campaigner pretending to be Banksy? An Aberdeen Banksy. Either way, what a great statement!' (Mark on Twitter)
'These libraries and buildings were only shut a few days ago. These are just bored kids who have nothing better to do becasue all their local facilities have been taken away! Just sheer vandalism by Banksy in Aberdeen' (Sara on Twitter)
This is obviously an April Fool's joke aimed at raising the profile of the serious plight of local councillors closing six beloved libraries in Aberdeen. It was designed with maximum silliness in mind. Did I get you? Maybe there will be a real Pranksy who will deface the mothballed libraries.
